As the first round of admissions to the country’s premier engineering institutes, the IITs, gets underway, a distinctive trend has emerged. As usual, the top JEE rankers are opting for B.Tech in Computer Science. However, the initial data released by JoSAA shows a major shift. Civil engineering, which had been in a slump, has surged so dramatically this year that even leading experts are taken aback.

The most notable changes have appeared at two of the nation’s top institutions: IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi. According to experts, this shift is driven not only by the country’s ongoing infrastructure boom but also by the continuing turbulence in the global tech sector. The pandemic era has intensified fears of layoffs and job instability in technology, prompting top rankers to prioritise “stability,” or a secure career.

The spike in civil engineering this year has been extraordinary. Last year, the opening rank for civil engineering at IIT Bombay was 2,666, but this year it rose to an all-India rank of 385. The situation at IIT Delhi was even more striking. Last year, civil engineering opened at 3,030, but this year only candidates with ranks up to 179 managed to secure civil engineering as their first choice. Additionally, IIT Roorkee and IIT Bhubaneswar also witnessed a strong preference for civil engineering among top performers.

Civil Engineering Sees Huge Demand

Professor Dipankar Chaudhuri, former head of the Civil Engineering Department at IIT Bombay, said this shift is not unexpected, reported News18 Hindi. Campus placements in core sectors such as civil, structural, and environmental engineering have been excellent. IIT Bombay’s civil engineering programme is ranked No. 1 in India by the QS rankings. The country’s infrastructure development is advancing rapidly, with a shortage of graduates and a surplus of jobs. Experts believe civil engineers who also master AI tools will enjoy the strongest career prospects.

IIT Bombay CSE Seats Filled

This year, JoSAA announced allotments for a total of 67,323 seats across 134 institutions. IIT Bombay’s Computer Science course still holds the top spot. Its seat opened at All India Rank 1 and closed at Rank 65 (compared to 68 last year). IIT Delhi’s CS course opened at Rank 35 and closed at 123, while IIT Madras’ CS course opened at 67 and closed at 149. IIT Bombay also led in the girls’ category, with seats closing at Rank 395.

New IITs And Reshuffle In Female Seats

This new pattern was not uniform across all institutes. At IITs Jammu, Tirupati, Palakkad, and Ropar, civil engineering seats were available at much lower ranks than last year. The most dramatic changes appeared in the female supernumerary seats at the newer IITs. At IIT Dharwad, computer science seats for girls were easily available, even for candidates around 3200 ranks lower than last year.

This year, IIT Patna saw the most upheaval, with more than a 500-rank gap between opening and closing ranks for several courses. At IIT Kharagpur, there was a sudden spike in demand for physics.
