The National Testing Agency (NTA) has addressed concerns over alleged errors in the UGC-NET Sociology examination conducted on June 30, stating that it is reviewing the matter after students highlighted multiple issues with the question paper. NTA said typographical mistakes are not uncommon and that it became aware of the complaints through media coverage and social media discussions.
“Typographical errors are not unusual. We came to know about the matter through media reports and social media, and we are looking into it. So far, we have not received any complaints from students,” NTA sources told India Today.
Students earlier had alleged that the question paper contained numerous typographical errors, including the incorrect spelling of well-known sociologists’ names and commonly used academic terms. According to an Odisha Post report, examples included “Ritzer” being printed as “Putzer”, “social” as “oval”, “Parsons” as “Parsow”, “Ghurye” as “Ghunye”, “A R Desai” as “A K Desai”, and “Nussbaum” as “Nusbaut”, reported Orrisa Post.
Candidates also claimed that the Hindi translation of several questions was inaccurate and difficult to understand, forcing them to spend valuable time interpreting the wording rather than answering the questions. Some further alleged that the paper included topics and thinkers outside the prescribed syllabus and featured questions that did not align with the objectives of the examination.
English Exam Questions Repetitive
Meanwhile, candidates appearing for the UGC-NET English paper alleged that 67 of the 150 questions had been repeated from an examination conducted two years earlier, The Telegraph reported. They claimed that all of the repeated questions appeared in Paper II and that both the questions and their answer options were identical to those in the previous exam.
The UGC-NET comprises two papers. Paper I, common to all candidates, consists of 50 questions assessing teaching and research aptitude, reasoning ability, and general awareness. Paper II contains 100 subject-specific questions.
