Karnataka is planning to introduce bilingual classes in all government schools from the 2027–28 academic year. School Education Minister Madhu Bangarappa announced the plan, which will allow students to learn through both Kannada and English, reported The Hindu. The move is aimed at improving English education in government schools while ensuring that Kannada continues to remain an important part of classroom learning.

The state has around 46,757 govt primary and high schools, with nearly 43 lakh students. The government has already started bilingual classes for students from Classes 1 to 5 in 9,522 government schools. It now plans to extend the programme to all government schools across the state.

Apart from bilingual classes, the state has also introduced pre-primary education in government schools. LKG and UKG classes have started in around 7,500 govt schools. The initiative is expected to bring more young children into the govt school system and help them begin their education at an early age.

The state govt is also planning to recruit around 10,000 teachers. Teacher training will be an important part of the programme, as educators will need to be prepared to teach students using both languages.

The decision comes amid growing demand among parents for English education. Several families prefer English-medium schools because they believe that English proficiency can improve access to higher education and employment opportunities.

However, education experts have stressed the importance of teaching young children in a language they understand. Learning new concepts in a familiar language can help children follow lessons, ask questions and develop a better understanding of subjects.

The state govt is also seeking support from private educational institutions to strengthen rural schools to help improve the quality of education. Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has urged private school managements to adopt government schools and contribute their resources, experience and teaching facilities to improve the standard of education.

Under the plan, the government aims to connect 2,000 government schools with private institutions in different phases. The first phase will cover 1,000 schools. The initiative, called “Namma Shaale Namma Javabdari” (Our School, Our Responsibility), encourages private schools to do more than provide financial support. They are also expected to share their expertise, facilities and teaching resources to help improve learning conditions in rural government schools.
