Following the release of the JEE Advanced 2026 results on June 1, thousands of students have now turned their attention to the IIT and NIT admission process. Debates over CBSE results, re-evaluation, and marks have led to demands for some relaxation in the mandatory 75% Class 12 requirement for IIT admissions this year. However, IIT Roorkee has now clarified its stance. The institute has clearly announced that there will be no relaxation in the 75% eligibility criterion this year, meaning students must adhere to the existing rules for admission to IITs and NITs.
Why was relaxation in the 75 percent rule demanded?
After the JEE Advanced 2026 results were declared, many students and parents raised concerns that some students had scored lower than expected in their Class 12 exams. Many are also awaiting the outcome of the CBSE re-evaluation process. This sparked discussions on whether the 75% eligibility requirement could be relaxed or temporarily suspended this year. IIT Roorkee has now clarified that no such change will be made.

What did IIT Roorkee say?
IIT Roorkee told news agency ANI that the JEE admission process includes students from 36 different education boards across the country. Therefore, it would not be appropriate to alter the rules due to a controversy or issue linked to a single board. The institute emphasised that the 75 percent eligibility criterion had already been set and made public in December, so it cannot be modified midway through the admission process.
What are the admission rules?
Clearing JEE Main or JEE Advanced alone does not guarantee admission to IITs, NITs, and other central technical institutes. Candidates must also secure at least 75 per cent in their Class 12 board exams or be among the top 20 percentile. Reserved category candidates are exempt from this condition, but the 75 per cent marks requirement continues to apply to general category students.
Many students lost out last year as well
IIT Roorkee also mentioned that last year, many candidates who performed well in the JEE exam were denied admission to IITs and NITs because they did not meet the minimum Class 12 marks requirement. The institute reiterated that this rule is applied uniformly to all students. Hence, it cannot be changed this time due to any particular situation.
