The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced changes to the curriculum for Classes 9 and 10 for the 2026–27 academic session. Under the revised scheme, vocational education will be compulsory for students, while some subjects will be removed from the curriculum.
The changes will apply to students entering Class 9 in the 2026–27 session and moving to Class 10 in 2027–28. The current Class 10 batch will not be affected by these changes.
According to CBSE’s latest circular, students will have to study five main subjects: two languages, Mathematics, Science and Social Science. These subjects will have board examinations in Class 10.
CBSE Makes Vocational Education Compulsory
Under the new scheme, students will have to choose either Kaushal Vikas or one of the 22 skill subjects offered by CBSE. Students who choose one of the 22 skill subjects will have to appear for a Class 10 board examination in that subject. However, students opting for Kaushal Vikas will be assessed internally by their schools.
CBSE has listed 22 skill subjects that students can choose from. These include Retail, Information Technology, Security, Automotive, Introduction to Financial Markets, Introduction to Tourism, Beauty and Wellness, Agriculture, Food Production, Front Office Operations, Banking and Insurance, Marketing and Sales, Health Care, Apparel, Multi Media, Multi Skill Foundation Course, Artificial Intelligence, Physical Activity Trainer, Data Science, Electronics and Hardware, Foundation Skills for Sciences (Pharmaceutical and Biotechnology), and Design Thinking and Innovation.
Subjects Removed
CBSE has also removed certain subjects from the curriculum for the affected batches. These include Individuals in Society, CT and AI Modules, and Environmental Education.
Students will have to score at least 33 per cent marks in each of the five main subjects to pass Class 10. The final result will include both board examination marks and internal assessment marks.
The new scheme also allows a skill subject to replace Mathematics, Science or Social Science in certain cases. If a student fails one of these three subjects but passes the skill subject, the skill subject may be considered in place of the failed subject, as per CBSE rules.
