The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has declared the Class 12 results for 2026 on May 13. This year’s results come in the context of changes to the assessment system — the Onscreen Marking System. The pass percentage stands this year at 85.20%. In comparison, 88.39% passed last year, which was 3.19% more than this year.

Speaking in Delhi at the announcement of the CBSE Class 12 results 2026, Sanjay Kumar, Secretary, Department of School Education & Literacy, addressed students and commented on the changes in the assessment scheme.

He said: “I am glad that the CBSE class 12 results have come out today and I would take this opportunity to congratulate all the children and all those who have done well. To some, who may not have done that well, I would say not to lose their heart. Some difference in the percentage of marks this time, but that is quite natural because this time the scheme for assessment has changed. So, it shows in the results. But I don’t think that is the more important part. The more important part is that the examination results are out. Girls have done much better than the boys, as usual…”

How The CBSE 12th Assessment Changed This Time?

AI was used not only to verify board exam answer sheets but also to supervise the overall quality of evaluation. While a teacher checks scripts on a digital screen, an AI system running in the background tracks whether the examiner has devoted sufficient time to each answer and detects any inconsistency in the marking pattern. This setup is intended to speed up result declaration and completely remove errors in re-checking and totalling.

Answer scripts from CBSE exam centres are sent straight to regional hubs, where they are digitised with high-speed scanners. Every student’s script is assigned a unique barcode, ensuring the examiner cannot identify the candidate. This “blind evaluation” promotes impartiality. After digitisation, the answer copies are stored on a cloud server.

Examiners now assess answer sheets via a computer login, either from home or at a designated evaluation centre. On their screen, the student’s script appears on one side and the board’s marking scheme on the other. Examiners award marks for each question. The system will not display the next script until all pages and all questions of the current one have been fully evaluated.

The AI functions as a supervisory tool, mainly overseeing three key aspects. First, it monitors irregular marking: if an examiner evaluates scripts too quickly, the AI generates an alert. Second, it handles points calculation by automatically summing up the marks, removing the possibility of totalling mistakes. Third, it performs pattern analysis, detecting if students are consistently scoring unusually low or high on a particular question, thereby enabling a review of the marking scheme.
