In the meantime, there is encouraging news for engineering aspirants: the number of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) seats at the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) has increased this year. Computer Science is among the most popular and in-demand branches at IITs. Every year, millions of students aim to secure admission in this field, so the rise in seats is being seen as a major relief.
As per the seat matrix released by JoSAA 2026, the total number of Computer Science seats across the 23 IITs in the country has gone up to 2,183. In JoSAA 2025, this number was 2,129, indicating an increase of 54 seats this year. Although this may not seem like a large jump, each additional seat in a branch like Computer Science can create new opportunities for thousands of students.
According to JoSAA 2026 data, the total number of Computer Science seats across all 23 IITs has risen to 2,183, compared to 2,129 last year. This means 54 new seats have been introduced in just one year. Experts believe this increase may benefit students who previously missed out on their preferred branch by a narrow margin. However, the rise in seats will not significantly ease competition, as millions of candidates aspire to study Computer Science at IITs every year.
How many Computer Science seats does each IIT have?
Based on JoSAA 2026 data, IIT Bombay has the highest number of Computer Science seats in the country, offering 199 CSE seats. It is followed by IIT BHU Varanasi with 155 seats and IIT ISM Dhanbad with 145 seats. IIT Kharagpur offers 140 seats, IIT Kanpur 129 seats, and IIT Ropar 120 seats. IIT Guwahati has 114 seats, IIT Roorkee 109 seats, and IIT Delhi 99 seats. IIT Madras offers 87 seats, while IIT Patna has 86 seats. IIT Bhubaneswar and IIT Indore have 82 seats each. IIT Mandi and IIT Jodhpur both offer 80 seats. Among the newer IITs, IIT Bhilai has 61 seats, IIT Goa 45 seats, IIT Dharwad 65 seats, and IIT Palakkad and IIT Jammu have 50 seats each.
Where have seats increased compared to 2025?
A comparison of last year’s and this year’s figures shows a clear rise in seats at some IITs. At IIT Bombay, Computer Science seats have increased from 198 to 199. At IIT ISM Dhanbad, the count has gone up from 139 to 145. The most notable increases are at IIT Palakkad and IIT Jammu. Last year, both institutes had 40 seats each, but this year their intake has been raised to 50 seats each, adding 10 new seats per institute. At most other IITs, the number of seats has remained nearly unchanged.
Why is Computer Science the most sought-after branch at IIT?
In recent years, opportunities have grown rapidly in areas such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, data science, cybersecurity, and software engineering, driving the rising popularity of Computer Science engineering. Students pursuing CSE from IITs have strong prospects of securing lucrative job offers from leading tech companies in India and abroad. Consequently, most top rankers in JEE Advanced prioritise this branch. The demand for Computer Science is so high that most seats are filled in the early rounds of JoSAA counselling, and in many premier IITs, the cutoff for this branch is the highest among all disciplines.
