The Vande Bharat Express is one of Indian Railways’ most advanced trains, and operating it is considered a prestigious assignment. But unlike many government jobs, there is no direct recruitment for Vande Bharat loco pilots. Instead, experienced railway drivers are selected after years of service, a strong safety record and specialised training. 

Indian Railways does not advertise vacancies specifically for Vande Bharat loco pilots. Candidates first join the railways as Assistant Loco Pilots (ALPs) through the Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs). With experience and promotions, eligible loco pilots may later be chosen to operate Vande Bharat trains. 

To apply for the Assistant Loco Pilot (ALP) post, candidates must generally pass Class 10 (Matriculation/SSLC), along with an ITI certificate in a relevant trade recognised by NCVT/SCVT, or a diploma or degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics or Automobile Engineering (or related disciplines). 

As per the latest RRB ALP recruitment notification, candidates must be 18 to 30 years of age (age relaxation applies to reserved categories) and meet the prescribed medical standards, including excellent eyesight and physical fitness, as the job involves train operations and passenger safety. 

The recruitment process for Assistant Loco Pilots includes Computer Based Test (CBT) 1, Computer Based Test (CBT) 2, Computer-Based Aptitude Test (CBAT), document verification, and medical examination. Only after clearing all stages are candidates appointed as ALPs. 

After joining as an ALP, candidates gain several years of operational experience, get promoted to higher loco pilot grades, maintain an excellent safety and service record, and undergo specialised training on Vande Bharat’s advanced systems before being assigned to operate the train. 

Newly recruited Assistant Loco Pilots receive an initial basic pay of Rs 19,900 under Pay Level 2 of the 7th Central Pay Commission. With allowances, their in-hand salary is generally around Rs 35,000-40,000 per month, depending on the place of posting. 

Experienced loco pilots who operate premium trains like Vande Bharat earn significantly more. Their monthly salary, including allowances, can cross Rs 1 lakh, depending on seniority, duty hours and running allowance.

Besides basic pay, loco pilots receive several allowances, including Dearness Allowance (DA), House Rent Allowance (HRA), transport allowance, running allowance, and night duty allowance (where applicable). Among these, the running allowance, which depends on the distance travelled and time spent on duty, is one of the biggest contributors to overall earnings.

Loco pilots also enjoy several government employee benefits, such as medical facilities, pension and retirement benefits (as applicable), railway travel concessions, paid leave, job security, and promotion opportunities.
