UPSC Prelims 2026 Cut-Off Prediction: What Aspirants Need To Know
The dust has barely settled on the UPSC Civil Services Preliminary Examination 2026, but discussions around the expected cut-off are already in full swing. With many aspirants describing this year’s paper as lengthy and unpredictable, experts believe the qualifying marks could dip compared to recent years. Here’s a simple breakdown of what candidates need to know.

Experts Expect A Lower Cut-Off: Several educators and coaching institutes believe the General category cut-off could fall in the 73-77 marks range, with some estimates placing it around 75 marks.

The GS Paper Was Considered Tough: Candidates and experts described the General Studies Paper 1 as analytical, lengthy, and unconventional. The exam featured more statement-based and conceptual questions, making it harder than usual.

CSAT Also Threw Some Surprises: While CSAT was broadly manageable, it included some new question patterns that caught many aspirants off guard. Time management and adaptability played a crucial role.

Only GS Paper 1 Determines The Cut-Off: Marks obtained in General Studies Paper 1 are used to decide the Prelims cut-off. CSAT is qualifying in nature, and candidates need at least 33% to clear it.

History Suggests Tough Papers Mean Lower Cut-Offs: The General category cut-off dropped to 75.41 in 2023 after one of the toughest papers in recent years. Experts say a similar trend may emerge in 2026 because of the exam’s difficulty level.

Cut-Offs Rose Sharply In 2024 And 2025: After the dip in 2023, the General category cut-off climbed to 87.98 in 2024 and 92.66 in 2025, reflecting relatively easier papers and intense competition.

The Official Cut-Off Will Come Much Later: UPSC does not announce the Prelims cut-off immediately after the exam. The official cut-off marks are released only after the entire Civil Services Examination process, including the final results, is completed.
