The Union Public Service Commission’s UPSC Civil Services Preliminary Examination 2026 has concluded. As per experts and candidates, the level of UPSC Prelims 2026 was more difficult compared to last year’s paper. Since the difficulty level directly impacts the merit list, candidates are now anticipating a slightly lower cut-off after this moderate to difficult paper.

According to Shubhra Ranjan, a renowned PSIR faculty, the paper was excellent and of a high standard. The paper was excellent for candidates who studied deeply rather than resort to shortcuts, she said.

While B Singh, CMD of NEXT IAS, and Manjunath Thammineedi, Founder of PMF IAS, stated this year’s question paper was excessively long and significantly more difficult than in 2025. The paper included a higher number of applied, ethical, and analytical questions. Given the difficulty and length of the questions, experts initially estimate that this year’s cutoff could be much lower, around 70 to 75 marks, he told News18 Hindi.

Experts also note that this time General Studies (GS Paper 1) did not strictly follow the traditional pattern and instead strongly focused on testing candidates’ conceptual clarity. Many candidates reported that while several questions were lengthy, complex, and heavily concept-based, some could be answered easily with a solid grasp of the basics.
