Most students preparing for competitive exams have a single goal: to become either a doctor or an engineer. Both professions are considered among the most challenging and demanding career paths in the country. As a result, very few people even think about pursuing both at the same time. However, some individuals break the norm and create history through their dedication and hard work. One such inspiring example is Nikhil Sadineni, who successfully bridged the gap between medicine and engineering.
Nikhil Sadineni made headlines in 2017 after securing AIR 55 in NEET UG. This helped him earn admission to the country’s top ranked medical college, AIIMS Delhi. MBBS is widely regarded as one of the most rigorous courses in India, leaving students with little free time. Yet, during this demanding phase, Nikhil made an unexpected move.
He realised that artificial intelligence would transform the future of healthcare, so instead of waiting for that change, he decided to prepare himself for it along with medical studies. Alongside his MBBS, he quietly enrolled in the Bachelor of Science (BS) in Data Science and Applications programme at IIT Madras. Balancing two highly demanding degrees simultaneously was an extraordinary achievement that impressed even experienced academicians.
Nikhil’s decision wasn’t just a hobby. During his medical studies, he realised that AI and machine learning would play a crucial role in disease diagnosis, medical imaging, and hospital systems. Instead of choosing one field over the other, he decided to master both. He completed his BS from IIT Madras with an outstanding CGPA of 9.82, gaining expertise in subjects such as deep learning, big data, and data structures.
For many, completing both an MBBS and a degree from IIT would have marked the peak of their academic journey. For Nikhil, however, it was only the beginning. He appeared for GATE 2025 and stunned everyone by securing All India Rank 1 in the Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (DA) paper. This remarkable achievement earned him admission to another premier institution, IISc Bangalore, where he is currently pursuing an MTech in Artificial Intelligence.
Beyond academics, he also worked as a junior resident at AIIMS Delhi, and joined XpertDox, a medical informatics company based in Washington, D.C., where he worked on natural language processing systems to improve medical coding. He later rose to the position of Director of Medical Informatics, combining his expertise in medicine and artificial intelligence to drive innovation in healthcare.
His journey is proof that once you set your mind on something, all you need is effort and determination to achieve the goal.
