Former Union minister Smriti Irani has returned to a key organisational role in the BJP after party president Nitin Nabin appointed her national general secretary as part of the party’s new national team announced on Monday.
Her political career has often drawn attention, but what is Smriti Irani’s educational qualification? Here’s a look at her academic background.

Irani studied at Holy Child Auxilium School in New Delhi before enrolling at the University of Delhi’s School of Open Learning. However, her educational qualifications have been reported differently in election affidavits filed at different points.

In her 2004 Lok Sabha election affidavit, Irani had stated that she had completed a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree from Delhi University in 1996. However, in affidavits filed for the 2011 Rajya Sabha election and the 2014 Lok Sabha election, her highest qualification was listed as B.Com Part I from Delhi University’s School of Open Learning.

In a later affidavit filed in 2019, Irani stated that she had appeared for the first-year B.Com examination but had not completed the three-year degree course.

Before becoming a prominent political figure, Irani was widely known as a television actor. She later rose through the BJP’s organisational structure and became president of the party’s Mahila Morcha.

She entered Parliament as a Rajya Sabha member in 2011 and served as a Union minister in the PM  Narendra Modi government. She also contested the 2014 Lok Sabha election against Rahul Gandhi in Amethi.

Now, with Nitin Nabin’s latest organisational reshuffle, Irani has returned to the BJP’s national leadership as a general secretary, with the appointment taking immediate effect.
