The NTA has introduced important changes this year to make NEET UG re-exam student-friendly, transparent, and stress-free. The exam, scheduled for June 21, 2026, will no longer follow the old pattern and will now be conducted under revised rules. This decision aims to benefit candidates who used to panic in the exam hall due to time pressure or administrative formalities.
Earlier, NEET UG candidates often complained that valuable minutes were lost when invigilators came during the exam to obtain signatures on attendance sheets, carry out biometric verification, or complete other paperwork. Taking these concerns and suggestions seriously, the NTA has increased the total duration of the exam to 195 minutes (3 hours 15 minutes). In addition, the question booklet will now have more space for rough work to accommodate extensive calculations in Physics and Chemistry.
Extra Time For NEET UG
The most significant update for NEET UG 2026 candidates is the increased duration of the exam. As per the new NTA notification, candidates will now have a total of 195 minutes to attempt the paper and complete all formalities. The exam will still begin at 2 pm, but instead of ending at 5 pm, it will continue for an extra 15 minutes, until 5:15 pm. This additional 15 minutes will help candidates complete the paper without rushing.
The NTA has clearly explained the reason for adding this extra time. Earlier, crucial administrative procedures such as signing attendance sheets, giving thumb impressions, and undergoing security checks used to consume a considerable portion of the exam time. With the new provision, candidates should no longer feel that these official processes are eating into their writing time. They will be able to utilise the allotted duration more effectively and with less mental stress.
Another long-standing issue in NEET UG has been the lack of adequate space for numerical and lengthy calculations in Physics and Chemistry. Candidates often had to squeeze their rough work into tiny corners of the booklet, increasing the chances of mistakes. This year, the NTA has increased the space available for rough work in the question paper booklet. Now, candidates can carry out calculations and jot down important notes more comfortably and clearly.
Exam On June 21
The NEET UG 2026 exam will be conducted on June 21, 2026, in various cities across India and abroad. The NTA has emphasised that these changes are intended to make the exam more fair, secure, transparent, and convenient. The agency’s priority is to provide a better, stress-free environment for candidates without compromising the integrity of the examination. Candidates are therefore advised to note the revised timings and start practising mock tests accordingly.
