The National Medical Commission (NMC) has released the official MBBS seat matrix for the academic year 2026-27. According to the latest data, a total of 1,36,939 MBBS seats will be available for admission across 823 medical colleges in India.
Out of the total seats, 1,27,028 seats have already been approved, while 9,911 new MBBS seats have been added this year. Along with this, NMC has approved 25 new medical colleges, which will collectively offer 2,400 additional MBBS seats. The newly released seat matrix will play a crucial role for candidates seeking medical admission through NEET UG 2026 counselling.
NMC Releases Official MBBS Seat Details for 2026-27
The Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) under the National Medical Commission has issued the official MBBS seat details for the upcoming academic session. As per the released matrix, admissions will be conducted for 1,36,939 MBBS seats across 823 medical colleges nationwide.
The approved seat count stands at 1,27,028, while the number of newly added seats is 9,911, bringing the overall MBBS seat availability to 1,36,939.
NMC has clarified that medical colleges will be allowed to admit students only against the seats officially approved by the commission. No institution will be permitted to increase admissions beyond its sanctioned capacity.
The seat matrix has been prepared based on the approvals granted up to July 13, 2026. MARB has stated that if any changes or corrections are made to the approved seats of a medical college in the future, a revised order will be issued to the concerned institution and the updated seat matrix will be uploaded on the NMC website.
New Colleges Must Complete Formalities Within 7 Days
Private medical colleges that have received approval from NMC to start new institutions this year will be required to submit an Electronic Bank Guarantee (E-BG) within seven days. After verification of all required conditions, the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) will issue the Letter of Permission (LoP) to eligible colleges.
Increase in MBBS Seats in Government and Private Medical Colleges
The increase in MBBS seats has been recorded in both government and private medical colleges.
Government Medical Colleges:
India currently has 441 government medical colleges.
Existing MBBS seats: 61,185
Newly added seats: 2,111
Total government MBBS seats: 63,296
Private Medical Colleges:
India currently has 382 private medical colleges.
Existing MBBS seats: 65,843
Newly added seats: 7,800
Total private MBBS seats: 73,643
Newly Approved Government Medical Colleges
A total of 7 new government medical colleges have been approved, offering 400 MBBS seats. These include:
Andhra Pradesh: Government Medical College, Pittapuram – 50 seats
Chhattisgarh: Government Medical College, Dantewada – 50 seats
Chhattisgarh: Government Medical College, Janjgir-Champa – 50 seats
Chhattisgarh: Government Medical College, Jashpur-Kunkuri – 50 seats
Chhattisgarh: Government Medical College, Kabirdham – 50 seats
Chhattisgarh: Government Medical College, Manendragarh – 50 seats
Sikkim: Sikkim Government Medical College – 100 seats
18 New Private Medical Colleges Added
A total of 18 new private medical colleges have also been approved, creating 2,000 additional MBBS seats.

Bihar: Buddha Hospital and Research Institute – 100 seats
Bihar: Srinivas Educational and Research Institute of Medical Sciences – 100 seats
Chhattisgarh: Maa Pavati Institute of Medical Sciences – 100 seats
Haryana: Sanskaram School of Medical Sciences – 100 seats
Jharkhand: Sido Kanhu Medical College and Hospital – 100 seats
Karnataka: Attaluri Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre – 150 seats
Karnataka: Chettinad Institute of Medical Education and Research – 100 seats
Maharashtra: BSPM Medical College and Hospital – 150 seats
Maharashtra: Mount Vitas Medical College, Hospital and Research Centre – 100 seats
Rajasthan: Bharat Vikas Institute of Medical Sciences – 150 seats
Rajasthan: Dr. B.S.P. Tomar Medical College and Medical Sciences and Research – 150 seats
Rajasthan: Prince Medical College and Hospital – 50 seats
Tamil Nadu: APS Medical College Hospital and Research Institute – 150 seats

West Bengal: SKM Medical College – 150 seats
The release of the MBBS seat matrix provides greater clarity for NEET UG 2026 aspirants and will help candidates plan their counselling and college preferences more effectively.
The addition of 9,911 new MBBS seats and 25 new medical colleges for NEET UG 2026 is expected to increase the total number of available seats to 1,36,939 across 823 medical colleges.
