NEET UG 2026 Seat Upgrade: The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) has announced a series of major reforms for the NEET UG 2026 counselling process including the introduction of an online seat upgrade facility. Under the revised system, candidates who receive an upgraded seat in a subsequent round of counselling will no longer be required to physically report to the allotted college. The process will now be completed digitally through the MCC portal, saving students valuable time, travel expenses, and administrative effort.
The online seat resignation facility too will enable candidates to surrender or resign from an allotted seat through the counselling portal without having to visit the institution in person, IAS H Prasanna, Executive Director of Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) stated.
In addition, candidates applying under the NRI quota will now be able to upload and submit their supporting documents online for verification, further streamlining the admission process and reducing delays associated with manual document submission.

MCC has also directed participating medical colleges and state counselling authorities to publish accurate and timely information regarding seat availability, fee structures, and admission procedures. This will help candidates make informed decisions while filling their choices during counselling.
The committee has also conducted orientation and training sessions for counselling officials and institutional representatives to ensure the smooth implementation of these digital reforms across the country.

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has released the official MBBS seat matrix for the academic year 2026-27. According to the latest data, a total of 1,36,939 MBBS seats will be available for admission across 823 medical colleges in India. Out of the total seats, 1,27,028 seats have already been approved, while 9,911 new MBBS seats have been added this year. Along with this, NMC has approved 25 new medical colleges, which will collectively offer 2,400 additional MBBS seats.
