As JEE Main 2027 approaches, engineering aspirants have more technology-focused options to choose from than ever before. Computer Science Engineering (CSE) continues to dominate student preferences, but Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning and Data Science are rapidly becoming mainstream engineering specialisations.
The latest All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) 2023-24 data shows the scale of CSE’s dominance. Around 18.4 lakh students were enrolled in Computer Engineering, making it the country’s largest engineering discipline. In comparison, around 53,600 students were enrolled in AI and Machine Learning, while 51,600 were enrolled in AI and Data Science.

The numbers indicate that AI-focused branches have not overtaken computer engineering nationally. However, their growing presence reflects the changing technology landscape and the expanding demand for specialised skills.
CSE Still Leads Engineering Choices
Computer-related disciplines also dominate engineering graduation numbers. Of the 8.33 lakh Engineering and Technology undergraduate students who graduated, around 2.62 lakh were from Computer Engineering, ahead of Mechanical, Electronics, Civil and Electrical Engineering.
For JEE Main aspirants, CSE’s appeal lies partly in its broad curriculum. Students can build foundations in programming, algorithms, databases and software development before moving into areas such as AI, machine learning, cybersecurity or data science.

At the same time, colleges are expanding specialised AI-related programmes, giving students the option to enter these fields earlier in their academic journey.
AI Jobs Could Create New Opportunities
The changing demand for technology skills is also visible in the employment market. Suchita Dutta, Executive Director of the Indian Staffing Federation (ISF), explained that the the disruption is real, but the data points to transformation, not contraction. “Top IT firms expect to onboard 82,000 graduates in FY2026, signalling recovery in entry-level demand. Hiring intent has moderated—to 76% in the second half of 2026, as demand is being redirected. AI hiring within the IT sector rose 16% year-on-year; even as overall IT job listings declined 3%, AI and Machine Learning hiring grew by roughly 40–50% in early 2026.”
The opportunities ahead are significant. India’s AI sector is expected to generate more than 23 lakh job openings by 2027, compared with an estimated talent pool of around 12 lakh. The semiconductor mission is also expected to create nearly 10 lakh new roles. For graduates, industry demand is increasingly placing greater emphasis on skills alongside formal degrees, she added.
“National employability has risen from 46.2% in 2022 to 56.3% in 2026, though the academia-to-industry gap persists. This is where flexi staffing adds value: project-based hiring is up 38%,” Dutta added.
For students deciding their branch, factors such as the college, curriculum, faculty, placement record and opportunities for specialisation can be considered alongside the branch name.
There has been a gradual shift rather than a complete change in preference: CSE remains the dominant engineering choice, while AI is becoming an increasingly important part of what students, colleges and employers expect from the next generation of engineers.
