Computer Engineering is the top choice among BTech streams in India, according to the All-India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE), 2023-24. This is followed by Electronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Information Technology, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Architecture, Chemical Engineering, Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence & Data Science, and Agricultural Engineering.
Engineering and Technology programmes recorded a total enrolment of 46.33 lakh students across undergraduate (UG), postgraduate (PG), integrated, M.Phil., and Ph.D. courses in 2023-24, the report added.
At the undergraduate level, Engineering and Technology accounted for 12.9% of total enrolment, making it the third most popular discipline after Arts (32.1%) and Science (13.5%), while Commerce followed closely with 12%.
The report also highlighted the growing importance of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education. In 2023-24, more than 1 crore students, representing 22.5% of total enrolment, were enrolled in STEM disciplines. Notably, women outnumbered men in the Science stream.
Arts Dominate Higher Education Enrolment
Across all disciplines, Arts continued to dominate higher education enrolment with 1.1 crore students, of whom 53.9% are women. Science ranked second with 45.7 lakh students, including 53.4% female students, followed by Engineering and Technology with 43.9 lakh students, of which 31.1% are women. Commerce registered 40.8 lakh students, with women making up 48% of the total. While Medical Science saw 21.3 lakh enrolment of which women accounted for 57.4%. Education discipline had 17.8 lakh students, including 64.2% women.
Overall enrolment in Science across UG, PG, integrated, M.Phil., and Ph.D. programmes stood at 55.55 lakh, with women constituting 54.6% of the total. At the UG level, Science enrolled 45.68 lakh students, of whom 53.4% were women. Postgraduate Science programmes had 8.63 lakh students, with women accounting for 61.4% of enrolment. At the Ph.D. level, 80,284 students were enrolled in Science, with women making up 53.4%.
At the postgraduate level, Social Sciences emerged as the most preferred stream, accounting for 18.6% of enrolment, narrowly ahead of Management at 18.2%.
Universities collectively enrolled 1.09 crore students during the same period Government universities accounted for 68.1% of total university enrolment, while private universities contributed the remaining 31.9%.
