Most engineering graduates dream of graduating from a top college, getting a high-paying job, and building a stable career. Capt. Amar Simha Yadav chose a very different path.
After earning his B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering from IIT Mandi in 2017, Yadav joined Larsen & Toubro (L&T) as a Senior Engineer in the UAE. He worked on major infrastructure projects and had a promising corporate career ahead of him. However, despite the good salary and international exposure, he felt that something was missing.
He decided to leave his job and prepare for the Indian Army. In 2019, he joined as a Combat Engineer Officer and went on to serve for more than six years, rising to the rank of Captain. During his service, he led an Engineer Task Force of over 120 soldiers and more than 200 civilian workers, reported MoneyControl. His team carried out road construction, habitat development, snow clearance, water-point establishment, and infrastructure support in high-altitude border areas and counter-insurgency regions.
As Company Commander, Yadav trained over 100 soldiers while managing operations, logistics, equipment maintenance, and troop welfare. He also served as Adjutant, overseeing the administration and discipline of more than 700 personnel. Beyond military operations, he trained Assam Police Commandos in mine handling, counter-IED operations, and bomb disposal. He later coordinated defence infrastructure projects worth over Rs 500 crore along the Kerala coast and worked with government agencies on Coast Guard projects.
Yadav has shared that he left corporate life because he wanted a career with greater purpose. He once said the Army gave him the opportunity to stay physically fit, take on meaningful responsibilities, and serve the nation.
After completing his military service, Yadav has now joined the one-year MBA Executive programme at IIM Calcutta.
His journey from IIT to a corporate career, then the Army, and now IIM reflects his belief that learning and leadership continue to evolve throughout life. His story shows that meaningful careers are often built by following purpose rather than the safest path.
