There are two types of study abroad exams – English Language Tests; and Aptitude Tests to check logical thinking, problem-solving skills, and subject knowledge.

Many students dream of studying abroad to get global exposure, enjoy a better lifestyle, and build a successful career. Countries like the US, UK, Canada, and Australia offer excellent education opportunities, and a degree from a foreign university is highly respected worldwide.

Before applying to a foreign university, it is important to know about the entrance exams required for admission. Names like IELTS, TOEFL, GRE, and GMAT can sound confusing, but these exams are simply designed to check whether students have the skills needed to study and adjust in a new country.

These exams are mainly divided into two categories:

English Language Tests – These check your ability to read, write, speak, and understand English.

Aptitude Tests – These check your logical thinking, problem-solving skills, and subject knowledge.

The exam you need depends on your course, university, and study destination.

English Proficiency Tests: Checking Your English Skills

If you plan to study in an English-speaking country, you need to prove that you can understand lectures, communicate with teachers, and complete your studies in English. The most common English tests are:

IELTS (International English Language Testing System)

IELTS is one of the most popular English tests in the world. It is widely accepted in countries like the UK, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand. The test checks four skills including listening, reading, writing, and speaking.

TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)

TOEFL is especially popular among students applying to universities in the United States. It is mainly computer-based and focuses on American English skills.

PTE (Pearson Test of English)

PTE is becoming popular among students because the results are usually available quickly, often within 48 hours. Many universities around the world accept PTE scores.

For Bachelor’s Degree After 12th: SAT and ACT

Students who want to study undergraduate courses, such as a Bachelor’s degree, in countries like the US or Canada after completing Class 12 may need to take an aptitude test along with an English test.

SAT (Scholastic Assessment Test)

The SAT checks Mathematics skills, Reading ability, Writing skills and Critical thinking ability. Universities use SAT scores to understand a student’s academic readiness.

ACT (American College Testing)

ACT is similar to the SAT but also includes a science section. Students can choose between SAT and ACT depending on their strengths and preferences.

For Master’s and MS Courses: GRE

Students planning to study a Master’s degree in fields like technology, science, or humanities after completing courses such as B.Tech, B.Sc, or other undergraduate programmes may need to take the GRE (Graduate Record Examination).

The GRE tests Verbal reasoning, Quantitative skills (mathematics), and Analytical writing. Many graduate universities, especially in the US and Europe, consider GRE scores during the admission process.

For MBA and Business Courses: GMAT

Students who want to pursue an MBA or other management courses from top business schools abroad often take the GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test).

The GMAT checks skills such as Analytical thinking, Logical reasoning, Data interpretation and Decision-making abilities. It helps business schools understand whether a student has the skills needed for management studies. Although many schools also accept GRE scores, GMAT remains one of the most widely recognised exams for business programs.
