According to the THE Sustainability Rankings 2026, Lovely Professional University is the highest-ranked Indian university, being placed 23rd in the world.

Times Higher Education (THE) Sustainability Rankings 2026 announced on Wednesday saw  Asian universities dominating the list. This year, the rankings feature 1,646 universities from 116 countries and regions, and 962 of them are from Asia. While India is the second most-represented country in the rankings, with 110 universities included. The Philippines has secured the top spot with the highest number of institutions in the list, with 160 universities.

LPU Top Among Indian Universities

Lovely Professional University was the highest-ranked Indian university, placing 23rd in the world. Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham ranked jointly 37th, while JSS Academy of Higher Education and Research secured a joint 74th position.

Indian universities also achieved strong results in individual SDG categories. Manipal Academy of Higher Education was ranked number one globally for SDG 5, which focuses on Gender Equality.

Lovely Professional University also secured the top global rank in SDG 7, which measures performance in Affordable and Clean Energy.

University of Manchester Secures Rank 1

Globally, the University of Manchester kept its position as the top-ranked university. Griffith University came second, while Western Sydney University secured third place. Queen’s University Canada has grabbed the fourth spot while Universiti Sains Malaysia has been placed fifth.

Hanyang University South Korea has secured the sixth place, Hokkaido University and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia have jointly secured the seventh spot, Institut Agro France at ninth spot, National Taiwan University (NTU) Taiwan and University of Alberta Canada both at 10th place.

Australia, Malaysia and Canada each have two top 10 universities in overall ranking. New countries added in the rankings this year include Mali, Nicaragua, Niger and Tajikistan.

The THE Sustainability Rankings assess universities across 18 different tables. These include one overall ranking and 17 rankings based on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Universities from the United Kingdom performed strongly across the SDG rankings. Five UK institutions achieved first place in individual categories, while three others shared the top position in different SDG tables. The UK also had the highest number of universities in the overall top 200 rankings.
