As Delhi woke up to heavy rainfall on Thursday morning, many students and parents might be wondering whether schools and colleges would remain closed for the day. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) initially issued a yellow alert for Delhi-NCR, forecasting moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning. However, the weather situation intensified through the morning.

However, no holiday has been announced by the Delhi government, the Gautam Buddh Nagar administration, or the Gurugram district administration. As of now, schools and colleges are expected to function as usual, with students attending classes according to their regular schedule.

The showers brought much-needed relief from the sweltering heat and humidity that had gripped Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) in recent days.

The IMD upgraded its warning to a red alert on Thursday morning after its 6:45 am nowcast predicted a significant deterioration in weather conditions across Delhi-NCR. The forecast warned of moderate thunderstorms, lightning, and squally winds of 69–80 kmph, with gusts reaching up to 100 kmph. Light to moderate rainfall is expected across most parts of Delhi, while several areas could witness moderate to heavy showers.

The red alert marks a sharp escalation from the relatively light rain experienced earlier in the morning. According to weather observers, rainfall is likely to remain uneven across the city, with western parts of Delhi expected to receive heavier showers than the eastern regions. Combined with the forecast of strong winds, the conditions could lead to disruptions in several areas.

Weather tracker @navdeepdahiya55 on X reported that moderate to heavy showers have begun over northwest Delhi and Gurugram, marking the monsoon’s first significant spell of rain in the region. The showers are expected to spread across most parts of Delhi, Gurugram, Noida, Ghaziabad and Faridabad within the next hour. The update also warned of possible waterlogging in low-lying areas. After the intense spell, light rain is likely to continue until around 10–11 am.
