When Jagjeet Singh Bindra graduated from IIT Kanpur’s Department of Chemical Engineering in 1969, few could have imagined that decades later he would return to his alma mater with a gift worth $1.15 million — approximately ₹10 crore — to help shape the future of engineering education.
The donation, announced by IIT Kanpur this week, will fund the construction of the Janice and Jagjeet Bindra Chemical Engineering Annex — a state-of-the-art facility spread across nearly 4,000 square metres, designed to support teaching, research and innovation in one of the institute’s oldest departments.
The building will house advanced laboratories, smart classrooms, faculty offices and collaborative research spaces, with a focus on emerging areas such as sustainable technologies, biotechnology, advanced materials and computational catalysis.
Who Is Jagjeet Singh Bindra?
Bindra belongs to the first generation of IIT graduates who carried India’s engineering talent to the global stage. After completing his studies at IIT Kanpur, he built an illustrious international career in the chemicals, engineering and industrial sectors.
Over the years, he has held leadership positions in major global corporations and served on the boards of multinational companies, including LyondellBasell, Worley, Edison International, Transocean and Larsen & Toubro.
Is This His First Gift To IIT Kanpur?
Far from it. Despite spending much of his professional life abroad, Bindra has maintained a strong connection with IIT Kanpur over three decades. He has previously supported several initiatives, including the Jeet Bindra Unit Operations and Innovation Lab, the Jeet Singh Bindra Centre of Excellence in Specialty Chemicals, and the Jeet Bindra AI in Engineering Science Lab. He has also backed research grants, faculty support programmes, student-focused initiatives and infrastructure projects across the campus.

Bindra’s contribution reflects a modern version of that ethos. “IIT Kanpur provided me with outstanding education, which has been the foundation of my professional career,” he said while announcing the gift. “It is my privilege and honour to contribute in a small way so that IIT Kanpur can continue to enrich the lives of future student scholars.”

The Department of Chemical Engineering is among IIT Kanpur’s founding departments and has played a significant role in research related to energy systems, materials, process engineering and industrial technologies. The new annex is expected to create space for cutting-edge research while encouraging collaboration between academia and industry, with a focus on sustainability, clean technologies and advanced manufacturing.
Institute Director Manindra Agrawal described Bindra as one of IIT Kanpur’s long-standing benefactors and said the project would open new avenues for learning, innovation and translational research.
