C Vanmathi’s journey to becoming an IAS officer is marked by financial hardship, family responsibilities and determination to continue her education. Hailing from Erode district in Tamil Nadu, Vanmathi grew up in a financially constrained family and helped support the household by grazing buffaloes while pursuing her studies.
Despite the challenges, she continued her education and eventually appeared for the UPSC Civil Services Examination. She secured All India Rank 152 in the UPSC Civil Services Examination 2014 and was selected for the Indian Administrative Service (IAS).
Vanmathi’s early years were shaped by financial difficulties. Her father worked as a driver, and the family’s limited income meant that she had to contribute to household responsibilities while continuing her education.
As a child, she grazed buffaloes and collected fodder for them. Despite having limited resources, Vanmathi remained focused on her studies and aspired to build a different future for herself.
While studying in Class 12, Vanmathi reportedly faced pressure from relatives and people around her to get married. Early marriage was common in the community she came from, but she wanted to continue her education and become financially independent.
She chose to pursue her studies rather than give up on her educational goals, despite the social and financial challenges she faced.

Vanmathi continued her education after school and completed a Bachelor of Computer Applications (BCA) followed by a Master of Computer Applications (MCA).
After completing her postgraduate studies, she began preparing for the UPSC Civil Services Examination. She remained focused on the examination while balancing the responsibilities that came with her family circumstances.
One of the difficult phases of her UPSC journey came when her father fell seriously ill while she was preparing for the interview stage.
Vanmathi had to manage family responsibilities and her father’s hospitalisation while also preparing for the final stage of the civil services examination. Despite the difficult circumstances, she continued with her preparation and appeared for the interview.
Vanmathi eventually cleared the UPSC Civil Services Examination 2014 with an All India Rank of 152 and was selected for the Indian Administrative Service.
