School Summer Vacation 2026: The sun’s heat is at its peak across northern and central India, and the Meteorological Department has warned of a more intense heat wave from mid-May to June. Temperatures have reached around 45 degrees Celsius in several states, including Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Telangana.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued orange and yellow warnings for Jammu, Ladakh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh from May 18 to May 24.
In view of the scorching heat and prevailing heatwave conditions, state governments and district administrations have announced early and extended summer vacations for schools. This order applies to schools under all boards, including CBSE and ICSE.
Delhi
Summer vacation in Delhi schools began on May 11, and schools in the capital will now reopen directly on July 1. With mercury hovering above 40°C, Delhi may also experience heatwaves in some areas from May 19 to May 22, with temperatures likely to reach 45°C.
Uttar Pradesh
According to the official calendar for government schools in Uttar Pradesh, summer vacation will begin tomorrow, May 20. Schools will remain closed till June 15. However, many private schools have already declared holidays starting May 15. Meanwhile, schools in districts bordering Delhi, such as Noida and Ghaziabad, have been instructed to operate only from 7 am to 12 pm.
Rajasthan
According to the Rajasthan Education Department, there will be a 35-day summer vacation from May 17 to June 20.
Haryana
Summer vacation for schools in Haryana has not yet been officially announced. Schools are expected to remain closed from June 1 to June 30, but depending on weather alerts, the vacation may start earlier.
Bihar
In Bihar, summer vacation has been announced from June 1 to 20, giving students a total of 20 days of holidays.
South and other states
In Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, schools declared holidays early, from April 24 to June 11, due to extreme weather. In Chhattisgarh, schools are closed from April 20 to June 15. In Odisha, school holidays were extended from April 27.
