Students and villagers on Thursday locked the government higher secondary school in Alwar district’s Jodhwas village to protest against its dilapidated buildings and shortage of teachers, officials said.
Villagers said a portion of the roof slab of one of the school buildings collapsed on Wednesday, though no students were present at the time. They also said five of the six sanctioned senior teacher posts are vacant, reported PTI.
Two school buildings have already been declared unsafe but are yet to be demolished, they said.
The protest started around 7 am and continued until 6 pm, according to education department officials.
The incident sparked anger among students and villagers, who pointed out that 174 students are enrolled at the school but there are only three classrooms. They also complained that classroom roofs leak during the rainy season.
Villagers said four years have passed since the school was upgraded to the higher secondary level, but lecturer posts are yet to be sanctioned.
Additional Chief Block Education Officer Gaurav Addania and Chief Block Education Officer Shakuntala Yadav reached the school and tried to persuade the protesters to call off the agitation. However, the students and villagers remained firm on their demands.
Chief District Education Officer Mahesh Gupta and Additional District Education Officer Gajraj also reached the spot and held discussions with the protesters.
Gupta said seven teachers have been temporarily posted at the school to address the shortage. He added that a proposal regarding the school building has been sent to the Additional District Project Coordinator, Samagra Shiksha.
The students and villagers have demanded the immediate demolition of the dilapidated buildings and the filling of all vacant teacher posts.
A few days ago, a group of schoolchildren in Uttar Pradesh’s Hamirpur took their protest from the classroom to the district administration office, demanding a proper paved road to their school. Carrying the Tricolour and raising slogans, the students marched to the Hamirpur District Magistrate’s office along with their parents and staged a protest over the poor condition of the road connecting their villages to the school.
