The Patna district administration has extended the school holidays for students up to Class 8 across all government and private schools until June 30, 2026, due to the ongoing heatwave. The decision was announced through a fresh order issued by District Magistrate (DM) Kundan Kumar, aimed at safeguarding children from the health hazards posed by the prevailing extreme weather conditions, reported Times of India.

Earlier this month, schools across Patna had been shut until June 20.

In the directive issued on June 28, the administration noted that the continuing heatwave and high temperatures pose a significant risk to the health and safety of schoolchildren. Hence, classes will remain suspended till Tuesday, June 30.

The order has been issued under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, and follows an earlier directive dated June 21, 2026 (Memo No. 8706/Legal), which had imposed similar restrictions in view of the intense heat.

District Magistrate Kundan Kumar said the extension was necessary as the prevailing weather conditions continue to pose a threat to the health and well-being of young children. With the heatwave persisting across the district, suspending academic activities for lower classes was considered a precautionary measure to minimise heat-related health risks.

The district administration has instructed all government and private schools to strictly adhere to the order during the specified period. The move comes as several parts of Bihar continue to witness extremely high temperatures, prompting authorities to adopt preventive measures for the safety of schoolchildren.

The Patna administration had earlier revised the timings for classes 6 to 8. As per the order issued on June 14, classes would conclude at 10:30 am. The order clearly stated that the rising temperatures and heatwave conditions could adversely affect children’s health, and this decision has been taken as a precautionary measure.
