The controversy surrounding the country’s largest medical entrance exam, NEET UG 2026, continues unabated. Following the cancellation of the exam on May 3, students have now approached the Supreme Court challenging the re-exam scheduled for June 21, 2026. As many as 1,672 candidates have filed a petition, requesting the temporary postponement of the re-exam and the conduct a fair investigation of the matter.
During the hearing in the Supreme Court, advocate Adeel Ahmed argued that candidates are facing intense mental stress due to reports of paper leaks and rumours circulating on social media, as reported by Bar and Bench. He also highlighted technical issues, including website crashes and difficulties in downloading NEET UG admit cards.
The counsel further pointed out that concerns over the alleged paper leak have also been raised before the Delhi High Court, which has shaken students’ confidence. Persistent technical glitches during admit card downloads have added to their anxiety.
Chief Justice Surya Kant observed that such issues are already being addressed through judicial forums. He noted that since the matter is pending before a bench led by Justice PS Narasimha, all related arguments should be presented there.
In their petition, candidates stated that they were left with little time to prepare after the May 3 exam was cancelled and the re-exam was abruptly scheduled for June 21. Many had shifted focus to other entrance tests and academic commitments, making it difficult to revise the entire syllabus within a short span.
The plea also highlights broader challenges faced by candidates nationwide, including time constraints, mental stress, travel difficulties, and financial burdens. Technical problems on the examination website, such as server errors and repeated crashes during admit card downloads, have further worsened the situation and created panic among students.
Four major constitutional questions raised in the petition
In this petition filed by the candidates, several serious questions have been raised on the administration and examination system:
– Is conducting Re-NEET so soon not a violation of the right to equality (Article 14) and the right to life (Article 21)?
– Is conducting the examination amidst controversies without any independent verification not playing with the future of the candidates?
– Is it not an arbitrary decision to fix the exam date by ignoring the mental health and practical problems of the candidates?
– Is it not the constitutional responsibility of the administration to provide equal opportunities to all candidates without any discrimination?
What relief did the candidates seek from the court?
The petitioners have requested that the re-examination of NEET, scheduled for June 21st, be postponed for a period of time. Furthermore, an independent system be established to ensure that the NEET UG exam process is transparent, secure, and reliable, ensuring that no eligible candidate is discriminated against.
