Candidates who have secured a seat in the first round of NEET PG 2026 counselling but wish to upgrade to a preferred medical college or seat have received relief regarding first-year course fee payment. The National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) has revised the fee deposit rules for candidates allotted NBEMS seats through the All India Quota counselling process.

Under the revised guidelines, candidates who choose the Float option to participate in the next counselling round for a seat upgrade will not have to pay the first-year course fee while waiting for the next round’s allotment result. Candidates who decide to retain their allotted seat, however, must pay the applicable fee directly to the respective NBEMS-accredited hospital.

The change comes as the reporting and joining process for the first round of NEET PG 2026 counselling is underway. According to the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) schedule, candidates allotted seats in the first round can complete reporting and joining from October 26 to November 2, 2026.

Freeze option: Candidates who are satisfied with their allotted seat and do not wish to participate in further upgradation can choose Freeze. They must pay the first-year course fee directly to the allotted NBEMS-accredited hospital and complete reporting and joining within the prescribed deadline.

Float option: Candidates who wish to retain the possibility of securing a better seat in the next round can choose Float, subject to the applicable MCC rules. They will not need to pay the first-year course fee until the next round’s allotment result is declared. If they receive an upgraded seat, they must complete the required admission formalities at the new institute.

The revised fee rules do not remove other counselling obligations. Candidates must continue to follow all applicable MCC instructions and deadlines for reporting, joining and seat acceptance.

NEET PG 2026 Counselling: What Happens After Seat Upgradation?

NBEMS has also clarified that, if a candidate receives an upgraded seat, the training period will be counted from the date the candidate reports to and joins the upgraded institute. If the seat is not upgraded, candidates must follow the applicable instructions for their previously allotted seat and complete the required process within the stipulated timeline.

Hospitals must also update candidates’ reporting and joining status on the Intra-MCC portal within the prescribed timeframe. Candidates should confirm with their allotted institutes that their joining status has been recorded correctly.

The NBEMS Online Portal for Joining and Registration (OPJR) will be activated after all rounds of NEET PG 2026 counselling are completed by MCC. Candidates should not wait for the OPJR portal to open before completing their reporting and joining formalities under the MCC schedule.
