The southwest monsoon finally arrived in Mumbai on Tuesday, nearly 13 days later than its usual onset date, bringing relief from the prolonged spell of hot and humid weather. However, the heavy downpour overnight led to widespread waterlogging in several areas of the city on Wednesday morning, disrupting road traffic and impacting local train services.

The main question for students and their parents amid the situation is will schools, colleges and other educational institutions still be open?

As of now, there has been no official announcement regarding the closure of schools and colleges in Mumbai.

Despite the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a red alert for the city, the BMC has not released any directive instructing educational institutions to remain shut on Wednesday.

Students, parents and school authorities are advised to keep a close watch on updates from the BMC, district administration and educational institutions for any fresh advisories. This report will be updated if an official closure order is issued.

The situation also forced the temporary closure of the Andheri subway after it was submerged under rainwater. The BMC confirmed that vehicular movement through the Andheri underpass was suspended due to flooding. Waterlogging was also reported in parts of Bandra East and Everard Nagar, leading to the closure of another subway for public movement.

IMD’s 7 am nowcast issued an orange warning for Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Palghar and Sindhudurg, valid for the next three hours, predicting moderate to intense rainfall spells. For the day, Mumbai, its suburbs and Palghar remain under a red alert, while Thane is under an orange alert. Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg have been placed under a yellow alert.
