Muharram 2026: Andhra Pradesh Just Changed The School Holiday Dates; Here’s Why
The Andhra Pradesh government has revised its holiday calendar for Muharram 2026, changing the dates of both optional and general holidays in line with updated lunar calculations and recommendations from the Andhra Pradesh State Waqf Board. According to a report in The Times of India, the changes were notified through Government Orders (G.O.Rt.No.1176 and G.O.Rt.No.1177) issued on June 15, 2026. The revised schedule supersedes earlier notifications and seeks to align official holidays with the expected dates of 9th Muharram and 10th Muharram.

Under the updated calendar, the optional holiday that was earlier scheduled for June 16 has been shifted to June 25, 2026. Meanwhile, the general holiday originally planned for June 25 will now be observed on June 26, 2026. The revision reflects updated assessments of the Islamic lunar calendar and is intended to ensure that official observances coincide with the expected dates of Muharram.

State authorities said the latest calculations indicate that 9th Muharram is likely to fall on June 25, while Ashura, observed on the 10th day of Muharram, is expected on June 26. The revised dates are based on updated astronomical and religious assessments considered by the state administration during the review process. The amendments have been issued under G.O.Rt.No.1176 and G.O.Rt.No.1177, both dated June 15, 2026.

According to the TOI report, these notifications modify earlier government orders relating to the 2026 holiday calendar and formally replace the previously announced schedule published in the Andhra Pradesh Gazette. The state government said the revisions are aimed at ensuring administrative accuracy and synchronising official holidays with the expected religious calendar.

Educational institutions across Andhra Pradesh are expected to implement the revised holiday schedule. Government and aided schools have been advised to update their academic calendars to reflect the changes and avoid any disruption to examinations, attendance planning and other administrative activities.

Significance Of Muharram: Muharram marks the beginning of the Islamic calendar and is regarded as one of its most significant months. Ashura, observed on the 10th day of Muharram, holds particular religious importance and is commemorated by Muslim communities around the world through various religious and cultural observances. The revised holiday schedule is expected to ensure uniform implementation across the state and bring official observances in line with the updated religious calendar.
