Lovely Professional University (LPU) has suspended regular classes for 10 days from September 28 and postponed its mid-term examinations until further notice, following protests and clashes on the university campus and outside the institution in Phagwara, Punjab.

In a statement issued to students, the university said regular classes would remain suspended for 10 days from September 28. It also announced that the mid-term examinations had been postponed. A revised examination schedule will be communicated separately through the University Management System (UMS).

The decision comes after protests erupted on Sunday over allegations concerning the rape of a female student. Students blocked a section of National Highway 44 outside the campus, while the situation later escalated into clashes between protesters and police.

Police said protesters allegedly pelted stones at personnel and damaged several police vehicles. Additional forces were deployed to bring the situation under control. Police officials later said the situation had been brought under control and traffic movement on NH-44 would be restored.

Police have registered a rape case against an unknown person based on a complaint from students and formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the allegations.

The university administration, however, has denied that any rape took place on campus and has described the claims as rumours. LPU Registrar Monika Gulati said certain elements were spreading what the university termed “false, baseless and fabricated” allegations.

The protest reportedly began early Sunday near the university’s girls’ hostel. Some students alleged that a female student had been raped by a plumber several days earlier and claimed that the hostel warden had been informed but no action was taken. The allegations have not been established.

LPU also released a video statement featuring three female students from the hostel, who said that no such incident had taken place and that they had been living there for the past two months.

The protests continued through the day, with videos circulating on social media appearing to show damage to campus property and objects being set on fire. A section of NH-44 was also blocked, leading to significant traffic disruption.

The university has not yet announced a fresh date for the mid-term examinations. Students have been advised to follow the official website for further updates on the revised exam schedule.
