Karnataka Chief Minister D K Shivakumar said there is a proposal to set up an AI university, and the govt has sought suggestions from industry stakeholders.

Karnataka is considering setting up an Artificial Intelligence (AI) University and has sought suggestions from industry stakeholders as it looks to strengthen its position as a global technology hub, Chief Minister D K Shivakumar said on Wednesday.
Speaking after the Katalyst Connect: The Chief Minister’s Meet with Global Capability Centre (GCC) Leaders in Bengaluru, Shivakumar said the proposal was still at a conceptual stage and the government was consulting industry before taking it forward.
“There is a proposal to set up an AI university, and we have sought suggestions from everyone. It is a new idea. Whatever the world needs, we want to provide it from Bengaluru, and the world too looks to Bengaluru for it,” he said.
The event, organised by the Department of Electronics, Information Technology and Biotechnology in partnership with the Karnataka Digital Economy Mission, brought together over 200 GCC leaders to discuss artificial intelligence, talent development, research, infrastructure and ease of doing business.
Shivakumar said industry leaders had offered suggestions on mobility, centres of excellence, research and innovation, and expanding investments beyond Bengaluru. He added that the government would consider policy changes to meet industry expectations and maintain Karnataka’s competitive edge over other states.
To promote balanced regional development, the state plans to incentivise companies to set up operations in tier-II and tier-III cities such as Mangaluru, Kalaburagi, Belagavi and Dharwad by offering cheaper land, infrastructure support and double the permissible Floor Area Ratio (FAR) for projects creating employment.
“We are not only thinking about Bengaluru; we are looking beyond Bengaluru. We want to create a Team Karnataka with industry,” Shivakumar said.
Reaffirming the state’s commitment to the GCC ecosystem, Shivakumar said Karnataka remains India’s leading destination for Global Capability Centres, with Bengaluru hosting more than 35 per cent of the country’s GCCs. He said the government was committed to creating an environment where businesses can innovate, access world-class talent and scale globally, while positioning Karnataka as a leader in AI, engineering, research and enterprise transformation.
