The Directorate of School Education Kashmir (DSEK) has announced summer vacations for all government and recognised private schools up to the higher secondary level across the Kashmir Valley from July 6 to July 19, 2026, in view of the prevailing heatwave conditions.
As per the official order, all schools in the Valley will remain closed during the notified period, with regular classes scheduled to resume from July 20, 2026, reported ANI.
The decision comes amid a significant rise in temperatures across Kashmir over the past few days, with parents, students and school stakeholders seeking an early summer break due to the intense heat conditions.
Jammu and Kashmir Education Minister Sakina Itoo also shared the announcement on social media platform X, advising students to prioritise their health and safety during the vacation. She urged students to remain hydrated, take necessary precautions against the heat and use the break for rest and productive activities before returning to school refreshed.
In her post, Itoo stated, “In view of the prevailing weather conditions across the Kashmir Valley, all Government and recognised private schools shall observe Summer Vacation from 6th July to 19th July 2026. Schools will reopen on 20th July 2026.”
Highlighting the importance of student safety, the minister said, “The well-being and safety of our students remain our highest priority. I wish all our students, teachers, and school staff a safe, healthy, and refreshing break. I also urge everyone to stay hydrated, take necessary precautions during the heat, and utilise this time for rest, reading, and meaningful family engagement. Wishing you all a happy and safe summer vacation.”
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Kashmir witnessed unusually high temperatures during June, with maximum temperatures touching 35.4°C in Kupwara and 35.2°C in Srinagar. The month was recorded among the hottest June periods in the region in more than two decades.
Weather experts have advised residents to avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, especially during peak afternoon hours, maintain adequate hydration and follow precautionary measures to prevent heat-related illnesses. Special care has been advised for children, elderly people and individuals with existing health conditions during the ongoing hot weather conditions.
