Despite scoring 84% in her undergraduate course at Delhi University, a female student was told she could not secure placement through the college. Her ordeal was shared by one of her friends on LinkedIn, which prompted a major debate over whether campus recruitment system in India unfairly favours engineering and technical courses while overlooking humanities students.
The post was shared by Harshit Khare, entrepreneur and co-founder of The Highy Table, where he recounted the experience of a friend who graduated with a History (Honours) degree from the renowned university last year. “84%. Dean’s list. She could debate colonial economics for hours and write better than most people I know,” he said while describing her achievements.

However, when she approached her college placement cell, she was told that were no companies coming to recruit humanities students. “You know what her college placement cell told her? Sorry, we don’t have companies coming in for humanities students,’” he revealed. “That was it. No follow-up. No alternative. Just — sorry.”
Over the next eight months, the History graduate sent cold email, attended interviews for roles where was often deemed “not qualified” on paper and gradually began questioning her career choice. Eventually, she secured a content-writing role at a small startup.
He argued, “She eventually landed a content role at a small startup for ₹12,000 a month. Not because she lacked talent. Because a system decided, long before she even graduated, that her degree wasn’t worth a placement drive.”
Using the incident, he questioned the placement ecosystem. He mentioned, “The same system that celebrates ‘soft skills’ and ‘critical thinking’ in every job description can’t find a single recruiter for a student who spent three years studying exactly that. Human behaviour. History. Communication. Analytical thinking. Skills every organisation desperately needs. And yet. We’ve built a placement infrastructure that serves engineers — and quietly abandons everyone else.”
Khare concluded his post by inviting employers to share their experience of hiring humanities graduates and urged students not to internalise the rejection. “And if you’re a humanities student reading this, your degree is not the problem. The system just hasn’t caught up yet,” he said.
Internet Says Humanities Students Do Not Get Equal Placement Opportunities
The post struck a chord online, with many users agreeing that humanities students continue to receive fewer campus placement opportunities than their peers in engineering or management.
“Humanities changes perspective also inculcates inclusivity. But sadly, after pursuing grads they are left with very few options,” one individual said.
Someone else remarked, “Simply looking down upon Humanities Majors is unfortunately still existing, hope people realise everyone’s true value.”
Another person commented, “It is the sad reality. Humanities graduates are unwanted. Companies believe AI can do all that they do. For their own future, those who want to study humanities must reconsider their plans or have a backup plan with some additional skills.”
Meanwhile, a user said, “I’m sorry, but why would someone with a History degree want to work in a company? Isn’t that an academic field? All the people I know who did humanities never even thought about working in a company.”
