Schools and other educational institutions in Andhra Pradesh’s NTR district will remain closed on November 3 as Cyclone Murasu brings heavy rainfall to the region. Officials have announced a holiday as the district is likely to receive very heavy rain under the storm’s influence.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said cyclone Murasu crossed the south Andhra Pradesh coast between Nellore and Narasapur, near Ongole, between 3:30 am and 5:30 am on November 3. At the time of landfall, the system brought winds of 100–110 kmph, with gusts reaching 120 kmph.
The IMD said the cyclone was centred over south coastal Andhra Pradesh, near Ongole, around 40 km southwest of Bapatla. It is expected to move north-northwestwards and weaken gradually into a cyclonic storm by noon today. The system is likely to further weaken into a deep depression by midnight.
The weather department has issued a red alert for Krishna, Guntur, Bapatla, Prakasam and Nellore districts, warning of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and lightning. An orange alert has been issued for East Godavari, West Godavari, Eluru, NTR, Palnadu, Tirupati and Chittoor districts, where moderate to heavy rainfall is expected.
The IMD has forecast that rainfall activity will continue across parts of coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema over the next two days.
With very heavy rainfall expected, officials have declared a holiday for all educational institutions in NTR district on November 3. Residents have also been advised to avoid unnecessary travel and step outdoors only in case of an emergency.
Authorities have expressed concern over the possibility of landslides in Mogalrajapuram. Several families in the area have reportedly been shifted to safer locations as a precaution.
The IMD said the cyclone remains under continuous surveillance by Doppler weather radars at Machilipatnam and Visakhapatnam.
“It is likely to continue to move North-northwestwards and weaken gradually into a cyclonic storm (wind speed reaching 80-90 kmph gusting to 100 kmph) by noon and further into a deep depression (wind speed reaching 55-65 kmph gusting to 75 kmph) by midnight of today, the 3rd November, 2026,” the IMD stated.
