CBSE has issued a circular regarding the introduction of R3 (third language) in Class 6 under the CBSE Scheme of Studies 2026–27, in accordance with the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCFSE) 2023. Many schools have already begun implementation by uploading their selected R3 language(s) on the OASIS portal. However, some schools are yet to update their R3 language choices, the CBSE stated.

“It is heartening to note that a large number of schools have already initiated the implementation by uploading their chosen R3 language(s) in the OASIS portal. However, it has come to the notice of the Board that certain schools are yet to update their R3 language options in OASIS and formalise the implementation, while a few have filled in the choices that are contrary to the policy recommendations,” reads the official notice.

The Board has now allowed schools additional time to complete their administrative preparations. Institutions that have not yet submitted their R3 language options must finalise and upload them on the OASIS portal no later than May 31, 2026. Schools that have entered R3 language choices inconsistent with the policy recommendations are being given a further opportunity to revise and correct the entries in OASIS by the same deadline.

For scheduled languages (those listed in the Constitution of India), official R3 textbooks will be made available on the NCERT and CBSE websites by July 1, the Board stated.

If a school opts to offer an R3 language that is not a scheduled language of India, the Board advises such schools to use SCERT textbooks or other state-recognised resources, as recommended by CBSE for Classes 9 and 10. Schools choosing such languages must ensure that their curriculum fully conforms to the competencies specified in NCFSE-2023.

Schools that have not yet commenced teaching at least two native Indian languages (within the R1, R2, R3 framework) as mandated by the policy have been directed to begin instruction from July 1 without exception, strictly adhering to the curricular goals and competencies outlined in NCFSE-2023.
