Anil Agarwal, the founder and chairman of Vedanta Group, is one of India’s best-known business leaders. His journey from Patna to becoming the head of a global natural resources conglomerate is often highlighted as an example of entrepreneurial determination. Interestingly, Agarwal’s formal education did not extend to college.

According to The Economic Times, Anil Agarwal completed his matriculation from Miller High School in Patna, Bihar. He did not pursue higher education at a university or earn a college degree.

Instead, after completing his schooling, he chose to join his father Dwarka Prasad Agarwal’s business, which manufactured aluminium conductors.

Agarwal later left Patna for Mumbai at the age of 19 to explore business opportunities. According to Vedanta’s official account of his journey, he arrived in Mumbai with limited resources and ambitions of establishing himself as an entrepreneur.

His early years involved several business attempts before he eventually found success in the metals and mining sector.

In 1976, Agarwal began building the business that would eventually develop into the Vedanta Group. Over the years, his interests expanded across aluminium, zinc, copper, iron ore, oil and gas, and other natural-resource businesses.

A major milestone came in 2003, when Vedanta Resources was listed on the London Stock Exchange, making it the first Indian company to list on the LSE. The listing helped transform Agarwal’s business into an international enterprise.

Despite not pursuing a college degree, Anil Agarwal went on to build one of India’s largest business empires through years of hands-on experience, risk-taking and entrepreneurship. His journey from completing school in Patna to leading the Vedanta Group highlights how practical business acumen and determination can play a significant role in shaping an entrepreneur’s success, even without a conventional higher-education background.
