The Jammu and Kashmir government has extended summer vacations for all schools in the Kashmir Valley and the winter zones of the Jammu division until July 26, citing persistent heavy rainfall and adverse weather conditions.
Announcing the decision on Tuesday, Education Minister Sakina Itoo said the extension was made with the safety of students, teachers and their families as the top priority.
“Keeping the safety and well-being of students, teachers, and their families as our foremost priority, the summer vacation for all Government and recognized private schools in the Kashmir Division and Winter Zones of Jammu Division is hereby extended up to 26th July, 2026,” Itoo said in a post on X. (sic)
Schools will now reopen on Monday, she added, urging people to remain vigilant and follow official weather advisories.

Schools Shut In Shimla, Kullu
Himachal Pradesh too continues to grapple with severe weather, with heavy rainfall triggering flash floods, landslides and widespread disruption. Authorities ordered the closure of all schools and colleges in Kangra, Mandi and Sirmaur districts on Tuesday after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for heavy rain.
Schools, colleges and educational institutions also remained shut in Theog (Shimla), Salooni (Chamba) and Nirmand (Kullu) due to persistent rainfall.
Heavy to very heavy rainfall has lashed large parts of Himachal Pradesh since Monday evening. Palampur recorded the highest rainfall at 136.4 mm, followed by Dadahu (105.6 mm), Jatton Barrage (103.6 mm), Dharamshala (102.4 mm), Nahan (82.4 mm), Paonta Sahib (79.8 mm) and Bhattiyat (71 mm). Several other areas, including Kangra, Pachhad, Sangrah and Dhualakuan, recorded between 60 mm and 70 mm of rain.
The IMD has warned of very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, Mandi and Sirmaur districts, along with the possibility of flash floods, landslides and cloudbursts.
