Medical aspirants are likely to have a better chance of securing an MBBS seat this year, with the National Medical Commission (NMC) significantly expanding the number of seats available for the 2026-27 academic session.

The NMC has released the official MBBS seat matrix, according to which 1,36,939 MBBS seats will be available across 823 medical colleges in India. Of these, 1,27,028 seats have already been approved, while 9,911 new seats have been added this year. The expansion also includes the approval of 25 new medical colleges, together offering 2,400 additional MBBS seats. The increase is expected to improve the chances of admission for NEET UG 2026 candidates, whose results are expected by July 20 after the examination was held on June 21.

The expansion has been recorded across both government and private medical colleges. Government medical colleges now account for 63,296 MBBS seats, up from 61,185, after the addition of 2,111 seats across 441 institutions. Private medical colleges have seen a larger increase, with 7,800 new seats taking the total to 73,643 seats across 382 colleges, compared with 65,843 seats previously.

The NMC has approved 25 new medical colleges. Seven of these are government institutions, adding 400 MBBS seats. They include a new government medical college in Pittapuram in Andhra Pradesh, five new government medical colleges in Chhattisgarh located in Dantewada, Janjgir-Champa, Jashpur-Kunkuri, Kabirdham and Manendragarh, and the Sikkim Government Medical College, which has been allotted 100 seats.
