Significant changes are being planned for the NEET UG medical entrance examination. A parliamentary committee has recommended a complete overhaul of the exam pattern, citing security concerns over conducting the test for more than 20 lakh candidates on a single day. The committee has proposed holding the exam in multiple shifts, similar to JEE Main, to enhance security and streamline the process.
Another major recommendation is to make NEET UG a fully computer-based examination. The National Testing Agency (NTA) has assured that every possible measure will be taken to ensure a secure, transparent, and malpractice-free examination process. The recent NEET UG exam held on June 21 was widely appreciated for its smooth and secure conduct. If approved, these reforms are expected to come into effect from 2027.
Separate Entrance Exams for MBBS, AYUSH, and Nursing Proposed
During the parliamentary committee meeting, several Members of Parliament also suggested introducing separate entrance examinations for MBBS, AYUSH, and nursing courses. The proposal aims to provide students with a more course-specific admission process and improve opportunities for aspirants.
“Members also proposed holding separate entrance examinations for MBBS, AYUSH and Nursing courses so that fewer candidates appear in a single examination. NTA, however, informed the committee that admissions to these courses are all based on NEET scores and, therefore, separate examinations would not be feasible,” a source told ANI.
The NTA clarified that the final decision on this proposal will be taken by the Union Health Ministry. Meanwhile, the agency is working on implementing the recommendations of the Radhakrishnan Committee in a phased manner, with a focus on making the examination system more transparent and efficient.
Digital Infrastructure Must Be Strengthened
While supporting the move toward a computer-based NEET UG, the committee emphasised that the transition should only take place after establishing a strong nationwide digital infrastructure. This is essential to ensure that students from rural and smaller towns do not face technical or accessibility issues during the examination.
“The committee said that if NEET is conducted in CBT mode in future, it should be ensured that the required infrastructure is available across the country and all preparations are completed well in advance,” the source told the news agency.
The committee also expressed concern over the growing impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on education and employment, while highlighting the increasing influence of social media on children as another important issue requiring attention.
