The QS World University Rankings 2027 have highlighted a decline in the global standing of some of India’s leading institutions, with IIT Bombay and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru both slipping in this year’s list.
IIT Bombay recorded a drop of 11 places, falling to 129th position from 118th in the previous edition. This time, the institute has secured rank 134, which is a decline of 5 places. This marks a continued downward trend for the institute, which had already seen a decline in its rankings last year. Once the highest-ranked Indian institution, IIT Bombay’s recent performance reflects the growing competition in global higher education.
Similarly, IISc Bengaluru witnessed a marginal dip, slipping by two places to 221st position from 219th in 2026. In 2025, the institute was placed at rank 211. While the fall is less steep compared to IIT Bombay, it underscores the challenges even top research institutions face in maintaining their global rankings.
IIT Delhi, Madras Rise In Rankings
The overall performance of Indian institutions this year presents a mixed picture. While some institutes have improved their standings, others have improved their positions slightly.
IIT Delhi, for instance, climbed to 118th position, continuing to hold the distinction of being the highest-ranked Indian institution. While IIT Madras which grabbed the 180th spot last year has been placed at rank 170 this time.

Commenting on the rankings, Prof. Somnath Baidya Roy, Dean, Planning, and Head, Ranking Cell, IIT Delhi, said the institute remained focused on delivering world-class and affordable technological education.
“IIT Delhi remains committed to the goal of providing world-class, affordable technological education and becoming a preferred destination for scholars worldwide. Our revamped curriculum, new infrastructure, and increased international engagement will enhance our quality and impact in the coming years. We see rankings as an outcome, not an objective. If we do the right things for the right reasons, rankings will follow naturally,” he told ANI.
