Artificial intelligence is becoming a regular part of how young Indians learn, work and prepare for their careers. Around 82% of Gen Z respondents use AI or generative AI tools at least once a week to learn or develop new skills, according to a report by Emeritus.

The finding comes from Emeritus’ ‘India’s Gen Z Outlook 2026: Recalculating Education, Ambition, and Success — The No Cap Generation’ report, which surveyed 1,010 respondents aged 15 to 28 across pre-college, higher education and early-career stages.

A separate Anthropic Economic Index report also highlights the growing use of AI among people in India. According to the report, 19.3% of Claude.ai conversations in India are related to education and learning, while homework-related queries account for 7.9% of interactions.

AI is being used for more than academic work. Indian users are also turning to the technology for coding, document editing, resume preparation, content creation and other professional tasks.

The Anthropic report found that Indian users rely on Claude more than the global average for areas such as mathematics and computer science theory, AI application development and web development. Use of AI for mathematics and computer science theory in India is twice the global average, while AI application development is 1.8 times higher.

Degree Alone No Longer Enough

The growing use of AI comes as young Indians place greater importance on practical skills. The Emeritus report further found that 65% of early-career respondents believe a degree alone is no longer enough to succeed in the job market.

However, continuous learning is also creating pressure. Around 60% said they feel burned out by the need to constantly upskill, although 75% believe learning the right skills is necessary to remain competitive.

The findings show that AI is moving beyond a simple question-and-answer tool. For India’s Gen Z, it is increasingly becoming part of everyday education, skill development and career preparation.
