The JEE Advanced 2026 results have once again highlighted the persistent gender gap in one of India’s most competitive engineering entrance examinations. As per official data, Shubham Kumar from the IIT Delhi zone secured the All India Rank (AIR) 1 with an impressive score of 330 out of 360. However, notably, no female candidate has made it to the top 10 this year.
Arohi Deshpande, also from the IIT Delhi zone, emerged as the top-ranking female candidate, securing AIR 77 by scoring 280 marks. While her performance is commendable, the absence of women in the top tier underscores a continuing disparity in top-level outcomes.
This year, out of 40,562 female candidates who appeared for JEE Advanced, only 10,107 qualified. Although the number reflects a significant presence, the overall success rate and representation remain lower compared to their male counterparts. Gender-Wise Trend Analysis Over The Years
Over the years, female participation in JEE Advanced has steadily increased. As per official data, registrations rose from approximately 34,520 in 2021 to 41,337 in 2025, marking a growth of nearly 20%. Similarly, the number of female qualifiers grew from 6,452 in 2021 to 9,404 in 2025 — an increase of about 46%. The pass percentage among girls also improved, rising from 19.8% in 2021 to 22.7% in 2025.
Despite these gains, the proportion of female qualifiers has seen only modest improvement, fluctuating between 15.4% in 2021 and 17.3% in 2025. For this year, the overall success rate for female students is 24.92% and for male students, it is 33.62%.
Policy interventions such as the introduction of supernumerary seats for women — increasing to over 1,500 seats — have played a role in boosting female enrollment in IITs. However, bridging the gap in top ranks and overall performance requires addressing deeper systemic challenges, including access to quality coaching, societal expectations, and academic support.
While the upward trend in female participation signals progress, the JEE Advanced 2026 results reiterate that achieving gender parity in India’s premier engineering institutions remains a work in progress.
The Journey Ahead: Counselling Process
Following the declaration of the JEE Advanced results, successful candidates will be able to participate in the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) 2026 counseling process. This year’s counseling process is unique, with no 12th-grade marks or percentage requirements for admission. However, final seat allocation will be based on meeting the eligibility criteria and requirements outlined in the information brochure. Students will now compete for seats at the country’s 23 prestigious IITs.
