Following the CBSE Class 12 results, the new assessment process — On-Screen Marking (OSM) — has triggered considerable anxiety and anger among students and parents. Many students allege that the digital assessment has caused a drop in this year’s pass percentage and led to lower-than-expected grades.

As soon as the CBSE Class 12 results were declared this year, social media platforms were flooded with complaints. Students and parents believe that the fully re-implemented OSM system has led to stricter marking. Many high-performing students claim their marks in core subjects are much lower than they had expected. The decline in this year’s pass percentage is also being attributed to digital checking, which has created an atmosphere of fear and distrust among students regarding the results.

Many CBSE Class 12 students say their step-marking has been affected because answer sheets are being checked on digital screens. They allege that long answers are difficult to read and interpret on a computer, causing teachers to rush through the evaluation. On social media, students are also claiming that they have been treated unfairly and that this new experiment has undermined a year’s worth of hard work.

In an official statement on the controversy, CBSE emphasised that students’ well-being is paramount. The Board outlined the benefits of OSM, stating that it brings uniformity in the evaluation of answer sheets across the country. If a student answers a question using an alternative method, there is a provision to award full marks for it, the Board added.

Sanjay Kumar, Secretary, Department of School Education and Literacy, Ministry of Education, along with CBSE assured that OSM evaluation is a modern method designed to ensure fairness in examinations. Under the On Screen Marking system, students’ traditional paper answer sheets are first converted into digital format using high-tech scanners. Teachers, or evaluators, then assess the answer sheets on a computer screen and enter marks directly there. This process virtually eliminates common human errors, such as incorrect totalling of marks or leaving any question unchecked, CBSE said.

CBSE’s ‘Action Plan’ For Students

For any student dissatisfied with his or her result, CBSE has provided completely transparent options:

Verification of Marks: Students can apply to have their marks rechecked.

Evaluation Book: Students can obtain and review the digital copy of their evaluated answer sheet.

Re-evaluation: If there is an objection to the marking of any particular question, students can request re-evaluation.
