Clearing the Chartered Accountancy (CA) examination is a major challenge for aspirants, given its extensive syllabus and demanding pass criteria. Mumbai-based Rajan Kabra overcame the challenge by securing All India Rank (AIR) 1 in the CA Final Examination 2025, after also topping the CA Foundation and Intermediate examinations on his first attempt. Kabra’s achievement reflects more than academic preparation. His approach combines conceptual understanding, disciplined time management, practical learning and a determination to persevere through difficult situations. A fan of the Harry Potter series, he credits the lessons he drew from its stories, along with the support of his family, for helping him maintain a positive outlook during his preparation. His professional journey has also extended beyond academics. Kabra currently works in private equity at Motilal Oswal and has previously worked with organisations including Boston Consulting Group (BCG) and KPMG.

CA Topper Rajan Kabra On Why Conceptual Clarity Matters: For Kabra, preparing for the CA examination is not simply about memorising textbooks or completing a large volume of study material. He believes aspirants need to develop a thorough understanding of theoretical concepts and learn how to apply them to practical situations. According to his approach, examiners assess candidates on their understanding of concepts and analytical abilities, rather than their capacity to reproduce memorised information. Applying classroom knowledge to real-life business scenarios is therefore an important part of preparation. His experience highlights the importance of combining consistent study with a practical understanding of accounting, finance and related subjects.

How Harry Potter Inspired Rajan Kabra To Never Give Up: One of the distinctive aspects of Kabra’s preparation was his interest in the Harry Potter series. He identifies the seventh book as his favourite and says the fictional world created by author JK Rowling offered lessons that extended beyond entertainment. The characters’ struggles and their determination to face difficult circumstances reinforced the importance of persistence. Kabra drew inspiration from this message, using it to maintain his mental strength and positive outlook when preparation became demanding. For CA aspirants facing long study hours, setbacks or the pressure of examinations, his experience underlines the value of developing resilience alongside academic discipline.

CA Rajan Kabra Credits His Father And Family For Support: Preparing for a demanding professional examination can involve considerable mental pressure. Kabra says the encouragement of his parents, sister and other family members helped him manage periods of fatigue and frustration. His father, a practising Chartered Accountant, played a particularly important role. Whenever Kabra encountered a difficult technical or practical concept, he could turn to his father for guidance and clarification. Having an experienced professional available at home gave him access to practical insights and support throughout his preparation. His experience highlights how mentorship and encouragement can complement individual effort when pursuing a challenging academic goal.

Rajan Kabra’s Interests Beyond Books: Kabra’s routine was not restricted to studying. He also took an interest in debates, attended major conferences around the world, and read journals and books. These activities helped broaden his exposure beyond the examination syllabus. Communication, leadership and the ability to engage with different perspectives are valuable skills in professional environments, particularly in fields such as consulting and private equity. Kabra’s career reflects this broader professional outlook. Before joining Motilal Oswal’s private equity business, he worked with BCG and KPMG, gaining experience in established corporate organisations. His journey illustrates how academic achievement can be complemented by communication skills, wider reading and professional exposure. Kabra’s experience offers several lessons for students preparing for the CA examinations or balancing professional commitments with further study.

1. Plan study time carefully: Rather than studying without a clear structure, aspirants can set daily and weekly targets, prioritise difficult topics and review their progress regularly. A realistic timetable can help maintain consistency throughout an extended preparation period.

2. Balance preparation With Work And Articleship: Candidates managing a job or articleship alongside exam preparation need to make effective use of their available time. Setting priorities, planning study sessions in advance and maintaining a sustainable routine can help them balance competing responsibilities.

3. Look Beyond Academic And Financial Success: Professional qualifications can open doors to career opportunities, but Kabra’s approach also highlights the importance of developing leadership, communication and social awareness. Aspirants can aim to use their knowledge and professional skills to contribute positively to society, rather than measuring success only through salary or job titles.
