The first week of September has begun, and Teachers’ Day is just around the corner. Every year, September 5 is observed across the country as a day to honour teachers and remember their invaluable contribution to our lives.

As the day nears, we bring you the inspiring story of a teacher from West Bengal whose dedication to teaching goes far beyond her years of service. Even after retiring from her government job nearly eight years ago, 68-year-old Tripti Bakshi continues to walk into her school every day—not as an employee, but simply because she wants to teach.

Who is Tripti Bakshi?

According to media reports, Tripti Bakshi lives in Barkhoshkhana village in the Shahid Matangini block of Tamluk, East Midnapore, West Bengal. She previously served as the headmistress of Khustikari Primary School and retired from government service in 2018.

However, retirement did not end her connection with the school or her students. Nearly eight years later, she continues to attend school regularly, teach children and spend the entire school day with them. The remarkable part is that she now does all of this without receiving a salary.

Took just 11 days off in 39 years of teaching

One of the most striking aspects of Tripti Bakshi’s career is her extraordinary attendance. During her 39 years as a teacher, she reportedly took only 11 days of leave.

At her retirement farewell, Bakshi is said to have told those present that a teacher never truly retires. She promised to remain connected with her students and return to school even after retirement. She kept that promise by returning to school the very next day.

Even today, she reportedly reaches school around 10:30 am, teaches the children throughout the day and returns home in the afternoon.

Teaching is an “addiction”

For teacher Bakshi, teaching is much more than a profession. She says she does not want to stay at home and loves spending time with children. According to her, teaching has become a kind of “addiction.”

She says that as long as her health permits, she will continue coming to school and teaching. For this 68-year-old educator, retirement may have ended her government service, but it certainly has not ended her journey as a teacher.
