The undergraduate (UG) admission process through the Gujarat Common Admission Services (GCAS) has concluded, with nearly 1 lakh seats remaining vacant across universities in Gujarat.

According to data available on the GCAS website, universities across the state have around 5.50 lakh UG seats in total. However, a significant number of seats remained unfilled even after the completion of the admission process.

At Gujarat University, around 54,000 students have been allotted admission, while more than 10,000 UG seats remain vacant.

This year, UG admissions in Gujarat continued to be conducted through the GCAS platform. The admission process was initially expected to be shifted to individual universities after three rounds following protests by student organisations. However, four rounds were ultimately conducted through GCAS, followed by another four rounds after the process was handed over to individual universities.

This took the total number of admission rounds to eight.

Students were given an opportunity to apply for admission in each round, including those who registered for the process at a later stage. Authorities have now announced the completion of all eight rounds.

University sources said the Arts stream recorded the highest number of admissions, while science colleges witnessed the lowest enrolment. In the Commerce stream, around 10,000 seats remain vacant, reported Times of India.

The number of vacant seats could rise further depending on developments concerning St Xavier’s College. If the ongoing issue is resolved and the college conducts a fresh admission round, students who have already secured seats at other institutions could cancel their existing admissions and apply for seats at St Xavier’s.

Sources also indicated that vacancies in the Science stream could increase in the coming weeks. A number of students currently enrolled in science colleges may withdraw their admissions as medical and paramedical admission processes progress, the report added.

This could lead to additional vacancies in science colleges across the state.
