Milad un Nabi, also known as Eid-e-Milad, will be observed in India on Wednesday, August 26, 2026. The festival marks the birth anniversary of Prophet Muhammad and is listed as a holiday by several government departments and institutions. However, whether schools, and colleges, will remain closed depends on the holiday calendar followed by the respective state, city or organisation.
The holiday status of Milad un Nabi is not uniform across India. While some states classify it as a general or gazetted holiday, others may list it as a restricted or optional holiday. Furthermore, since the Islamic calendar follows lunar cycles and religious observance can depend on local moon sighting, dates may differ in some regions.
Several states, including Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Jammu and Kashmir, Madhya Pradesh and Manipur, have listed August 26, 2026, as a holiday for Milad-un-Nabi/Eid-e-Milad.
In Haryana, Milad-un-Nabi appears in the 2026 holiday listings as a restricted holiday, meaning its treatment may differ from that of a general public holiday. While Madhya Pradesh and Manipur calendars list Milad-un-Nabi as a gazetted holiday on August 26.
Is Eid-e-Milad a school holiday?
There is no nationwide rule requiring all schools in India to remain closed for Milad un Nabi. Schools generally follow the holiday calendar issued by the state education department, board, district administration or their management.
Schools are likely to remain closed in AP, Telangana, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Jammu and Kashmir. A few Gurugram schools too have announced a holiday on August 26.
Students and parents should therefore check their school’s academic calendar or the latest holiday notice before assuming that August 26 will be a holiday.
They should not solely rely on a general holiday list and must check the school or college academic calendar or the university’s holiday notice. They must also keep check of any last-minute notification issued by the state government.
