India’s ancient language Sanskrit and its rich knowledge tradition are set to gain a new identity in Southeast Asia. The Foreign Study Centre of the Central Sanskrit University will soon be established at Thailand’s Silpakorn University. A historic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two universities was signed on Monday at Silpakorn University’s Wang Tha Phra campus in Bangkok.
The agreement is being seen as a significant milestone in strengthening educational, cultural, and centuries-old civilisational ties between India and Thailand.
Indian Ambassador to Thailand Puneet Agarwal was present on the occasion. He congratulated both universities and described the agreement as an important step towards advancing academic cooperation and preserving the shared cultural heritage of India and Thailand. He also assured the Indian Embassy’s full support for the partnership.
Existing Sanskrit Studies Centre to become Foreign Study Centre
Under the MoU, the existing Sanskrit Studies Centre at Silpakorn University will be developed into the Central Sanskrit University’s Centre for Overseas Studies. The centre was originally established during the tenure of former External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj.
The upgraded centre will serve as a major platform for promoting Sanskrit, Indian culture, and Indian knowledge traditions internationally.
The relationship between India and Thailand extends beyond diplomacy and is deeply rooted in cultural and spiritual connections. The two nations share historical links through Sanskrit, Pali, and Buddhist traditions. The new agreement is expected to further strengthen this shared civilisational bond.
New academic programmes and collaborations
Following the agreement, several academic initiatives will be launched jointly by the two universities. These will include:
Faculty exchange programmes
Student exchange opportunities
Joint research projects
Joint degree programmes
Online courses
Academic publications and knowledge-sharing initiatives
These programmes will provide students and researchers from both countries with opportunities for international learning and collaboration.
The two universities will undertake collaborative research and academic activities in areas including Sanskrit, Pali and Hindi studies, Indian Knowledge Systems, Ramayana studies, Buddhist studies, Sanskrit epigraphy, Yoga, Vastu Shastra, Astrology, Brahmi script and Indian philosophy. Joint seminars, research projects, and publications on these subjects will also be encouraged.
The partnership will also focus on preserving rare manuscripts in Sanskrit, Pali, and Prakrit through digitisation. E-resources will be developed, and efforts will be made to create a modern digital Sanskrit ecosystem that enables students and researchers worldwide to access these resources online.
The Indian Embassy in Thailand has committed to providing comprehensive support for the initiative. Assistance will include faculty support, scholarships, availability of Sanskrit books, and development of resources through India Study Centres and Sanskrit Resource Centres.
Srinivas Varakhedi, Vice Chancellor of Central Sanskrit University, said the agreement represents more than an institutional partnership—it creates a bridge connecting the knowledge, cultural, and spiritual heritage of India and Thailand. He said the Centre for Overseas Studies at Silpakorn University would become a key centre for spreading Sanskrit, Pali, and Indian knowledge traditions across Southeast Asia.
Prof. Varakhedi added that the initiative would also encourage the introduction of Sanskrit courses at other universities in Thailand. Along with this, joint research projects, training programmes, seminars, and several new academic collaborations will be developed.
Experts believe that this agreement will further deepen educational and cultural relations between India and Thailand. It is expected to play an important role in taking Sanskrit, Indian philosophy, and the country’s ancient knowledge traditions to a global audience.
The initiative marks a significant step towards creating a new international identity for India’s cultural and intellectual heritage.
