Kerala’s ruling Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) has decided to proceed with the implementation of the PM SHRI (Prime Minister Schools for Rising India) scheme. The current government cannot withdraw from the initiative as the previous Left Democratic Front (LDF) government had already signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Centre, reported Indian Express.
The UDF government will continue with the project to secure the allocated funds, which it said should not be viewed as a gesture of generosity from the Centre. Congress MP Adoor Prakash said that a UDF sub-committee will identify and finalise the schools where the scheme will be implemented.
What Is The PM SHRI Scheme?
Launched by the Union government in 2022, the scheme seeks to upgrade existing schools across the country by improving infrastructure, teaching practices, and digital learning facilities. Under PM SHRI, around 14,500 schools nationwide are expected to be developed as “exemplary schools” that reflect the principles of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The initiative covers schools affiliated with state boards, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), Kendriya Vidyalayas, and Navodaya Vidyalayas.
The primary objective of PM SHRI is to create schools that provide quality education through modern infrastructure, innovative teaching methods, and a focus on the overall development of students. The scheme promotes experiential learning, competency-based education, skill development, and technology-enabled learning instead of relying only on traditional classroom methods.
A key feature of the scheme is the partnership between the Centre and state governments through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). By signing the agreement, states enable selected schools to receive central assistance for improvements such as smart classrooms, upgraded laboratories, better learning resources, teacher training programmes, and green-school initiatives. While the Centre provides financial and technical support, state governments continue to manage the daily administration of schools.
The expected benefits of PM SHRI schools include improved learning outcomes, better access to digital tools, enhanced teacher capabilities, and a stronger focus on creativity, critical thinking, vocational skills, and life skills among students. The schools are also expected to act as role models by demonstrating effective educational practices that can be adopted by other institutions.
